James Cormier received his MS degree in Medical Illustration from the Medical College of Georgia in 2008. He also holds a MFA in sculpture from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana (1995) and a BFA in sculpture from the University of Montevallo in Montevallo, Alabama (1989). Additionally, he has studied fine arts and art history in Italy through the University of Georgia, funded in part by the Premio di Cortona Assistantship in Printmaking (1987).

James is a multidisciplinary artist with a diverse professional background. He has taught college level courses in printmaking, drawing and sculpture, as well as art in elementary school education. He has extensive experience in theatrical production, having served as the Master Scenic Artist for the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Town and Gown Theatre and as Master Carpenter for Tulane’s Summer Lyric Theatre.

During 1996 and 1997, James was heavily involved with his wife’s dissertation research among a group of hunter-gathers, known as the Guaja, in the Amazon rainforest of Brazil. Deeply affected by that experience, James has sought to apply his artistic talents to the promotion of scientific and medical literacy ever since. Subsequently, James went on to serve as the Senior Exhibits Fabricator and Prototyper for the McWane Science Center in Birmingham, Alabama until his enrollment at MCG in 2006.  In his final semester, James received the prestigious Inez Demonet Scholarship from the Vesalius Trust for Visual Communication in the Health Sciences.  Inspired by this recognition, he looks forward to new opportunities to promote science and medicine through the beauty of art.
